Malaekahana
is located on Oahu’s north shore, very close to the towns of Laie and Kahuku. From ancient times, Malaekahana has been a special place, serving as a Puuhonua, or “place of refuge.” Here, crystal blue sky meets turquoise ocean and golden, silky sands, where the first native-run Hawaiian State Park is located. Malaekahana State Recreation Area has one of the safest, most beautiful campgrounds on the islands. Forty primitive sites with picnic tables and fire pits are located on a gated 37-acre wooded beach park with 24-hour on-site security. The beach here is a crescent-shaped white sand beach and the gentle waters of Malaekahana Bay are perfect for all sports, swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, surfing and diving. The beach has been popular with local residents for many years, and endangered sea turtles also make Malaekahana Beach their home. The James Campbell National Refuge is just a short hike from the beach, and just 600 feet offshore is the Moku Auia Seabird Sanctuary - so the area is a favorite among birders. Although Malaekahana is not considered to be one of Oahu’s “official” North Shore beaches, it is subject to the same high surf conditions experienced every winter on the North Shore.

Malaekahana Weather & Climate

Northeastern Oahu is part of the wet windward coast and has a subtropical climate. The prevailing northeasterly trade winds are a dominate factor in the climate of Oahu, and even the warmest months of the year are comfortable due to the blowing trade winds. The average air temperature ranges from 74 to 88 degrees with moderate humidity of around 53 percent during the day. The island has two mountain ranges that serve to separate the moist windward (east) side from the drier leeward (west) side. Showers occur almost daily on the windward side, most frequently during the evening hours. There are no distinguishable season changes on the island of Oahu, although it is usually a few degrees warmer in the summer months.
