Kawela Bay is located on the quiet north shore of Oahu, between Sunset Beach and Turtle Bay. Kawela Bay offers calm turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling and diving, and the only white sand beach on the North Shore open year round for swimming and sunbathing. Many consider it the North Shore’s best beach, and it was used for the movie “Joe vs. the Volcano,” and the “Magnum P.I.” television series. Kawela Bay is also home to many giant sea turtles. It’s often secluded, where one can walk for miles without seeing anyone else, except during winter weekends when the area does see a little more action during the World Surfing Championships. Most of the time, however, Kawela Bay remains an easy and laid back place to stay. You can walk the beach all the way to Turtle Bay, or drive to Sunset Beach to watch the surfers. The whole north shore provides lots of “old Hawaii” flavor, yet also offers shopping and fine dining. Other recreational activities in the area include golf, hiking, biking, horseback riding, windsurfing and sailing. Haleiwa Town is just a 15-minute drive from Kawela, and Honolulu is approximately 48 miles away.

Kawela Bay Weather & Climate

Northeastern Oahu is part of the wet windward coast and has a subtropical climate. The prevailing northeasterly trade winds are a dominate factor in the climate of Oahu, and even the warmest months of the year are comfortable due to the blowing trade winds. The average air temperature ranges from 74 to 88 degrees with moderate humidity of around 53 percent during the day. The island has two mountain ranges that serve to separate the moist windward (east) side from the drier leeward (west) side. Showers occur almost daily on the windward side, most frequently during the evening hours. There are no distinguishable season changes on the island of Oahu, although it is usually a few degrees warmer in the summer months.
