Maili
is on the sunny, western side of Oahu, an area undiscovered by many tourists, yet just 24 miles west of the Honolulu Airport. Maili Point, however, is pretty well known among surfers who come here annually for an international surfing contest. The waters of Maili Point are teeming with sea turtles and schools of dolphins, and in season, it's a great place for whale watching. Maili Beach is quiet and pristine; a secluded spot that is perfect for long walks on the uncrowded sands, or sunbathing and beachcombing. Just a fifteen-minute drive takes you to Ko Olina and some of the most beautiful swimming and snorkeling lagoons in the world. Other nearby points of interest include Pokai Bay Beach Park, the Kaneaki Heiau, which is a 17th century temple, and Kaneana Cave, the legendary home of Nanaue, a son of the shark god. The nearby town of Waianae has locally made arts and crafts, fresh fish markets and restaurants, a resort spa and luau. Most people come to Maili because it's a chance to experience "real" Hawaii without all the crowds and noise, but if you get in the mood for more nightlife, Waikiki Beach is less than an hour away.

Oahu has a tropical climate, with only two seasons - winter and summer. By some people's standards, the climates should be spring and summer. Temperatures vary little, and winter is only slightly cooler and wetter than summer. Visitors encounter more variations in temperatures between elevations and location on the islands than from seasons. The east sides of the islands are wetter due to exposure from prevailing northeasterly tradewinds, which brings more rain to the eastern shores. The west sides, or "leeward," tend to be much drier. The sunny western side of Oahu is no exception, and it receives most of its rain October through March. Summer months receive very little to no precipitation. Hawaii's latitude is in the tropics, which means the length of day is relatively uniform throughout the year. In wintertime, winds from the southwest, called "Konas" sometimes bring heavier rainstorms, but severe storms, such as hurricanes, are rare.
