Wailuku
is located on the northwestern side of Maui along Highway 320 near the West Maui Forest Reserve. Wailuku is the county seat of Maui County and many of its buildings in the downtown area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This sleepy little town is like stepping back in time, with its faded wooded storefronts, old plantation homes and stores that seem right out of the fifties and sixties. The town has a spectacular view of the Haleakala Crater and is right on the way to the Iao Valley. This valley is part of the West Maui Forest Reserve, and is shaped somewhat like a cul-de-sac, with walls nearly a mile high. You can travel four miles into the valley on a scenic winding road. One point of interest along the way is a rock formation that resembles the profile of JFK. While in the Wailuku area, also be sure to visit the Halekii-Pihana Heiaus State Monument, which includes the remains of two temples that were rededicated as war temples by Maui Island’s last ruling chief. Other attractions near Wailuku include the Bailey House Museum, and the Kepaniwai Park and Heritage Gardens. A lot of people bypass Wailuku on their way to Iao Valley, but this quaint little town is well worth the time to stop and visit.

The northwestern region of Maui near the West Maui Rainforest receives a moderate amount of rainfall during the year, with most of it occurring between November and March. Summer months are dry, with some months often receiving season no measurable precipitation. The trade winds, often at speeds of 40 to 45 mph at the airport, serve to make living conditions in the nearby communities very pleasant and comfortable. Humidity is usually moderate, with wet season humidity averaging slightly higher than in the dry season. However, due to the system of natural ventilation provided by the prevailing winds, the weather is seldom too hot, even during the warmer months of the year. The normal range in temperature between the warmest month, August, and the coldest month, February, is only 7.2 degrees
