Maalaea
is located on South Maui Island, which is the sunniest, driest part of the island. This oceanfront village is away from the hustle and bustle of Maui’s other popular vacation spots, and is centered around a small, picturesque boat harbor. The Maui Ocean Center, a new aquatic ocean complex, is the largest aquarium in Hawaii, and gives visitors a close up look of ocean life, from a shallow-water surge pool, to reef tanks, a touch pool, and a 100-foot long, 600,000 gallon-main tank. The most spectacular thing about this tank is that the walkway goes right through it – so that you are surrounded on three sides by marine life! Maalaea is a fun and affordable place to stay, with three miles of windswept beaches for beachcombing and romantic moonlit walks. The beach is partially backed by Kealia Pond, which has been designated as a Federal National Reserve. Maalaea offers the true spirit of Maui and is quiet and serene, yet has a great central location, just a short drive to the other entire island adventures.

The island of Maui has both rain forest and desert conditions. The southwest side receives only 12 inches of rain, mostly during the winter months, and the east side receives approximately 90 inches per year. Mountain regions may get over 300 inches. The constant breezes keep Maui's temperature very comfortable. Trade winds are nearly always calm in the morning hours. Kona winds come from the opposite direction of trade winds and usually indicate that a rainstorm will soon arrive. Maui is known for its many rainbows, which usually occur in early morning or late afternoon, depending on wind direction and wind speed. Severe weather such as tsunamis and hurricanes are possible but rare on the Hawaiian Islands. The southwestern side is considered the sunniest, driest region of Maui.
