Kihei
is located on the southwest coast of Maui, between Waikapu and Wailea. If you are looking for a budget-friendly place to base your Maui vacation, head to Kihei. Here you will find affordability and convenience along a 7-mile stretch of coastline. Eight sandy beaches in all can be found along this scalloped shaped coast, where you can swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, go deep-sea fishing or ocean kayaking, and whale watching (in season.) Kihei has some of the best wind surfing beaches in Hawaii, with Ohukai Park on the northern end of Kihei being the best. And, one of Maui’s best kayak routes is along the Kihei Coast. There is easy access to calm water here and nothing beats seeing Maui from the sea the way the early explorers did! Kamaole County Park, in Kihei, has three separate beach parks with convenient shopping, tour services and restaurants right across the street. For non-beach activities, you’ll find helicopter tours, tennis and the world class golf resorts of Wailea and Makena just minutes away. “Sunny Kihei,” as it is often called, has lots of shopping, activities and excellent restaurants, all within walking distance of the beach condos. All in all, it’s one of Maui’s greatest vacation bargains.

The island of Maui has both rain forest and desert conditions. The southwest side receives only 12 inches of rain, mostly during the winter months, and the east side receives approximately 90 inches per year. Mountain regions may get over 300 inches. The constant breezes keep Maui's temperature very comfortable. Trade winds are nearly always calm in the morning hours. Kona winds come from the opposite direction of trade winds and usually indicate that a rainstorm will soon arrive. Maui is known for its many rainbows, which usually occur in early morning or late afternoon, depending on wind direction and wind speed. Severe weather such as tsunamis and hurricanes are possible but rare on the Hawaiian Islands. The southwestern side is considered the sunniest, driest region of Maui.
