Makena is located off the beaten track on Maui’s beautiful southwest coast. This private, secluded area is home to an upscale security-gated property that offers guests one, two, three or four bedroom oceanfront apartments with awe-inspiring views. Adjacent to the condominiums is a golf course that many call Maui’s masterpiece – where you can play 54 holes of championship golf amid some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. Makena is on Maui’s less crowded side, so you can explore deserted beaches, snorkel, dive, surf and swim without any hassles. A short drive south is Makena Big Beach, which is a beautiful little cove and beach that’s perfect for picnicking and swimming. Keep going south a little further and watch for the shoreline access signs that take you to another gem – a soft, golden sandy beach with black lava outcroppings on both sides of the cove. Other things to do in the area include sightseeing at the lava “moonscape” around LaPeruse Bay, whale watching (in season) and deep-sea fishing, sail boarding and boogie boarding, hiking, biking and horseback riding. Makena is near the town of Wailea, called the “Beverly Hills by the Sea,” with everything from art galleries to fine jewelry and clothing boutiques.

Makena Weather & Climate

The island of Maui has both rain forest and desert conditions. The southwest side receives only 12 inches of rain, mostly during the winter months, and the east side receives approximately 90 inches per year. Mountain regions may get over 300 inches. The constant breezes keep Maui's temperature very comfortable. Trade winds are nearly always calm in the morning hours. Kona winds come from the opposite direction of trade winds and usually indicate that a rainstorm will soon arrive. Maui is known for its many rainbows, which usually occur in early morning or late afternoon, depending on wind direction and wind speed. Severe weather such as tsunamis and hurricanes are possible but rare on the Hawaiian Islands. The southwestern side is considered the sunniest, driest region of Maui.
