Spreckelsville
is a residential area that stretches about 1.5 miles between Kahului and Paia on the northeast side of Maui. Just outside of Spreckelsville is the windsurfing mecca of Hookipa Beach Park, where top-ranked wind surfers come to test themselves against the forces of nature. There is a high grassy bluff located on the far side of the beach that is a good place to stop and watch the wind surfers (which on an average windy day number in the dozens.) The park itself includes a pavilion, restrooms, showers, picnic tables and a barbecue area. The other main beaches in the area are Baldwin Beach, which is off limits to windsurfing and kite surfing, but is good for swimming and walking, and also Kanaha Beach and Paia Bay Beach. The Maui South Shore beaches are about 30 to 45 minutes away. Just minutes from Spreckelsville is the town of Paia, an old sugar plantation town where you’ll find modern conveniences and trendy restaurants alongside small family-owned stores that have been in business since the early plantation days. It’s also a haven for artists and features several art galleries with works of internationally known artists. Other nearby attractions include the Hui No Eau Visual Arts Center and the towns of Kahului and Wailuku.

The sunny north/northwestern region of Maui has moderate rainfall during the year, with most of it occurring between October and March. Occasionally an entire month during the dry season will go by with no measurable precipitation. The normal trade winds, accentuated by the funneling effect between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains, as well as by the daytime low pressure in the valley, often attain a speed of 40 to 45 mph at the airport, but serve to make living conditions in the nearby Kahului-Wailuku community pleasant and comfortable. Humidity at Kahului is usually moderate to high, with wet season humidity averaging slightly higher than in the dry season. However, due to the system of natural ventilation provided by the prevailing winds, the weather is seldom oppressive even during the warmer months of the year.
