Launiupoko
is located on the west side of Maui, just minutes south of the town of Lahaina. It’s home to the Launiupoko State Wayside Park, which can be found off the Honoapiilani Highway. This park has a large grassy area that is perfect for picnicking, a sandy beach, a children’s wading pool, restrooms and showers. It also offers great views of Maui’s neighboring islands; Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe. Launiupoko has very little traffic and therefore is a great place for walking and bicycling. Other recreational activities include golf, fishing, horseback riding, snorkeling and diving, kayaking, boating, sailing and windsurfing. Launiupoko is conveniently located and has easy access to all the beautiful beaches of West Maui, the Upcountry and the south Maui communities of Kihei, Wailea and Makena. A short drive north takes you to the historic town of Lahaina (once the capital of the Hawaiian Islands) with its’ quaint shops and art galleries and fine restaurants housed in old-west style buildings along main street. If you’re visiting in October, be sure to include Lahaina’s annual Halloween bash to your itinerary, it’s very similar to Mardi Gras and offers great fun for everyone. Other points of interest near Launiupoko include the Maui Sugar Cane Train and the West Maui Forest Reserve.

The northwestern tip of Maui is one of the driest and most sunny spots on the island. This region receives only about 12 to 15 inches of rainfall per year, mostly in the winter months, as compared to Hana on the east side which receives 90 inches per year. The prevailing trade winds serve to keep temperatures very pleasant and comfortable, even during the warmest months. The winds are from the northeast at about 5-15 miles per hour. Humidity is moderate to high, but due to the natural ventilation of the winds, the weather is seldom oppressive. In winter, Kona winds come from the opposite direction and usually indicate that bad weather is on the way. However, severe storms are rare on Maui.
