Hilo , pronounced Hee-low, is located on the eastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii, and has been named one of America's top 10 most livable cities. This small, historical town is the county seat for The Big Island and home to The University of Hawaii at Hilo. Its false-front stores and covered sidewalks in the downtown area enhance the small town charm of Hilo. Explore the shops on foot, or hop on board a "sampan" bus and see the town that way! Visitors and locals enjoy browsing the Farmer's Market held every Wednesday and Saturday mornings, where they can sample tropical fruits and purchase fresh orchids, anthuriums and other native plants and flowers. In the countryside surrounding Hilo you'll find wild ginger growing alongside the roads, waterfalls and lush jungles. Hilo has more rain than any other U.S. city, but this brings with it fresh air filled with sweet smelling flowers and rainbows cascading over lush vegetation of varying shades of green. Add to that the turquoise blue waters of the Pacific, and you have a virtual paradise! Highlights to see in the area include Akaka Falls, Lili'uokalani Park, which is 30 acres of Japanese gardens, Rainbow Falls, Richardson's Ocean Center and Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo, the only tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. Hilo has lots of pretty picnic spots and unusual jet black and green sand beaches! Tourists can hike, swim, bike, go snorkeling, and play golf or tennis. Hilo is also home to the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, the International Festival and the Aloha Festival.

Hilo Weather & Climate

Tropical rainforest surrounds the east coast of The Big Island, which is one of the wettest regions in Hawaii with over 130 inches of rainfall each year. Backed by steep forested mountains, temperatures vary little along the coast because the thousands of miles of ocean surrounding the island moderates both the air and water temperatures. However, the higher in elevation you go, the more extreme the temperatures. On Mauna Kea, the temperature drops an average of 3.5 degrees F for every 1,000 feet of elevation above sea level. This means it can be 80 degrees at the beach and only 50 at the summit. Due to moisture laden oceanic tradewinds, expect rainfall almost every day on the east coast, although the sun usually also makes an appearance. Occasionally cyclones reach Hawaii, although they are less frequent on the islands than in the south Pacific.
