Pepeekeo is located on the lush Hamakua Coast on The Big Island's east side. Nearby attractions include the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, which has been called the most beautiful spot in all of Hawaii, also Akaka Falls, the Four-Mile Scenic Drive, Onomea Bay, Lili'uokalani Japanese Gardens, Rainbow Falls and Richardson's Ocean Center. In addition, Pepeekeo is just a few miles north of the city of Hilo and the planned resort/shopping development of Wailea. The beautiful Hamakua Coast offers unparalleled recreational activities. Honoli'i is just minutes away, considered one of the Big Island's best surfing spots, and other sports include swimming, snorkeling, surfing, boating and sailing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and golf. The nearby city of Hilo offers "old Hawaii" charm with shopping, art galleries, a historical downtown and a great farmer's market every Wednesday and Saturday. The community of Wailea is less than four miles from Pepeekeo and includes 1500 acres of black lava shoreline with five beautiful beaches, three golf courses, an upscale shopping village and several resort hotels.

Pepeekeo Weather & Climate

The east coast of The Big Island is one of the wettest regions in Hawaii with over 130 inches of rainfall each year. Due to the amount of precipitation, tropical rainforest and steep forested mountains also make it one of the most beautiful. The area right along the coast has temperatures that vary little because the thousands of miles of ocean surrounding the island moderates both air and water temperatures. However, the higher in elevation you go, the more extreme the temperatures. This means it can be 80 degrees at the beach and only 50 at the mountain summits. Due to moisture laden oceanic tradewinds, expect rainfall almost every day on the windward east coast, although showers generally occur in the evening hours and are short, especially during the summer months. Occasionally hurricanes reach Hawaii, although they are less frequent on the islands than in the South Pacific.
