Akaka-Falls is located 11 miles from the town of Hilo on the eastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii. This is also known as the "windward" side of the island, and this means you can expect rain. However, don't let the rain discourage you. This is a historic, quaint little plantation town that has been beautifully restored with gift shops and art galleries. Akaka Falls is located inside Akaka Falls State Park, which is one of the most spectacular places to view the tropical beauty of the island! To reach the falls, you hike approximately one mile through a tropical rainforest and see banana plants, Banyan trees, bamboo groves and a huge variety of palms and vines. There are two large falls inside the park, and before you reach them you will pass by several smaller cascades. At the end of the hike, you are rewarded with the 442-foot Akaka Falls, known to be the most beautiful waterfalls on the island! From the edge of the pathway, you'll get an impressive view of the falls as it plunges into the pool below. The small town of Akaka Falls is inside the "Hilo-Hamakua Coast Cultural Corridor," where you'll find other scenic vistas, two beautiful botanical gardens, several other historic plantation communities, and lots of fine restaurants where you can sample "local" food. Nearby Hilo has other recreational opportunities for visitors, including tennis, three golf courses and an Olympic swimming pool.

Akaka Falls Weather & Climate

The east coast of The Big Island is one of the wettest regions in Hawaii with over 130 inches of rainfall each year. Due to the amount of precipitation, tropical rainforest and steep forested mountains also make it one of the most beautiful. The area right along the coast has temperatures that vary little because the thousands of miles of ocean surrounding the island moderates both air and water temperatures. However, the higher in elevation you go, the more extreme the temperatures. This means it can be 80 degrees at the beach and only 50 at the mountain summits. Due to moisture laden oceanic tradewinds, expect rainfall almost every day on the windward east coast, although showers generally occur in the evening hours and are short, especially during the summer months. Occasionally hurricanes reach Hawaii, although they are less frequent on the islands than in the South Pacific.
