Keaau is a small town on the eastern side of The Big Island, approximately 30 minutes from the city of Hilo. Keaau is peaceful and relaxing as it sits on the slopes of the Kilauea Volcano, amid an Ohia forest and tropical wild flowers. Found off the beaten path, Keaau is nonetheless a great central location, with easy access to all the major attractions on the "windward" side of the island. The rustic countryside around Keaau is perfect for hiking and biking, and you are just 30 minutes from black sand beaches, swimming, snorkeling, golf, hot springs and tide pools, botanical gardens and the museums and galleries of Historic Hilo Town. Lava Tree State Park is 15 minutes away and Volcanoes National Park is just an easy 45-minute drive from Keaau. You can enjoy exploring the historic plantation towns around Keaau, and there area several tropical flower gardens and nurseries within a short drive of town. The temperatures here are balmy, and Keaau is a nice place to sit back and unwind and enjoy the fragrant Pacific Trade Winds as you plan your next day's adventures.

Keaau Weather & Climate

Rainfall , rather than temperature, marks the greatest difference in seasons on The Big Island of Hawaii. Along with that, location is the greatest factor that determinates the amount of rain on the island. The area surrounding the town of Keaau, including the city of Hilo, is on the wet "windward" side of the island and receives significant rainfall all year, although more occurs in the winter months. This is mainly caused by orographic or "mountain rains," which form when moist trade winds move from the sea over the steep and high terrain of the island. Another source of rainfall comes from the towering cumulus clouds that build up over the mountains and interiors on sunny, calm afternoons. Although showers may be intense, they are usually brief and localized. The heaviest rains generally come from winter storms between November and April. Differences occur with each storm.
