South-Point is located at the southern tip of The Big Island in the Ka'u District and is the southernmost point in the United States. It is also the name of a small town located in the area. To actually reach the point, one must drive approximately nine miles along a deserted road that leads to the spectacular cliffs. The views from here are fantastic, but the ocean itself is difficult to access from the point. However, a three-mile jeep trail leads to a spectacular green sand beach (the sand is sprinkled with olivine crystal which gives it the greet appearance.) Swimming and snorkeling are allowed here, but caution is advised if the surf looks rough. Hiking along the coast at South Point is also a popular activity. The Ka'u Region is a land of contrasts; mountain forests, rolling green pastures and black sand beaches. The primary towns in the area are Na'alehu and Pahala. Driving further up the southeast coast takes you to the Puna District. Traveling in the other direction from South Point, a few miles northwest takes you to the South Kona District and Kealakekua Bay. The Bay is well known for its' snorkeling and diving and is a habitat for the Pacific Spinner Dolphin. Kealakekua Bay is also the spot where famous Captain Cook met his fate. A monument dedicated to him stands on the bay.

South Point Weather & Climate

Hawaii is in the tropics, with a climate that is mild throughout the year with moderate humidity, persistent northeasterly trade winds, very few severe storms and rainfall that varies greatly depending on location. The mountains are a major influence on the weather on The Big Island. The eastern "windward" side receives significantly more rain than the drier "leeward" side to the west and it is fairly consistent in amount throughout the year. The mountains obstruct and accelerate the flow of the warm, moist air from the ocean. As the air moves up and over the slopes and mountains, clouds form and rainfall is much greater. When the air descends over the leeward areas, it tends to be sunny and dry. These endless peaks, valleys, ridges and broad slopes are what gives Hawaii a climate that is different from the surrounding ocean, as well as a variety of differences within the islands themselves. These differences would not exist if the islands were flat and the same size.
