Ocean-View sits on the southwestern side of The Big Island in the Kau region. This small community is a "young" town (incorporated in 1969) and has all the amenities such as shopping, lodging, a town community center and two busy shopping centers. The town boosts sweeping views of the ocean and wide-open spaces, which draws visitors and new residents each year. Ocean View is in an ideal location to visit both sides of the island. Easy day trips take you to South Point (the southern most point in all of the U.S.) and Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike in to get a close up view of the lava beds. The town of Ocean View is also near white, green and black sand beaches, and just some of the activities available include swimming, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and exploring the quaint towns of "old" Hawaii. Ocean View is also near two of the most affordable golf courses on the island, Sea Mountain and Discovery Harbor. If you are looking for a central location, easy access to all the attractions on The Big Island, Ocean View makes a great place to base your Hawaiian vacation.

Ocean View Weather & Climate

Hawaii is in the tropics, with a climate that is mild throughout the year with moderate humidity, persistent northeasterly trade winds, very few severe storms and rainfall that varies greatly depending on location. The mountains are a major influence on the weather on The Big Island. The eastern "windward" side receives significantly more rain than the drier "leeward" side to the west and it is fairly consistent in amount throughout the year. The mountains obstruct and accelerate the flow of the warm, moist air from the ocean. As the air moves up and over the slopes and mountains, clouds form and rainfall is much greater. When the air descends over the leeward areas, it tends to be sunny and dry. These endless peaks, valleys, ridges and broad slopes are what gives Hawaii a climate that is different from the surrounding ocean, as well as a variety of differences within the islands themselves. These differences would not exist if the islands were flat and the same size.
