Naalehu has the distinction of being the southern most city in the United States. Located on the southeastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii, Na'alehu can be found along Highway 11 near Honuapo Bay and the Kau Forest Reserve. Naalehu is also near "Ka-lae," or South Point, which is the southern most point in the U.S., and is believed to be where the first Polynesians landed. You can hike out to the point and enjoy spectacular ocean views from the cliff shoreline. This picturesque, rural town has shops and restaurants and all the necessary amenities, along with a farmers market, a historical village/park, art galleries and a museum. Naalehu is also home to the annual Hawaiian Hula Festival every Labor Day. Nearby area attractions include the Green Sand Beach of South Point, (the only green sand beach on the island), three golf courses, a tennis court, hiking in the Kau Forest Reserve, tours of local orchards, fruit farms and coffee farms. And, you are just 15 minutes away from swimming, snorkeling, diving, fishing charters, windsurfing and kayak rentals. Naaleha is a 35-minute scenic drive to Volcano National Park where you can experience the world's most active, but safest volcano. The town of Naalehu is located in the "Kau" region of the island, known to many as the "real" Hawaii, and makes a good central location for touring the island.

Naalehu Weather & Climate

Hawaii is in the tropics, with a climate that is mild throughout the year with moderate humidity, persistent northeasterly trade winds, very few severe storms and rainfall that varies greatly depending on location. The mountains are a major influence on the weather on The Big Island. The eastern "windward" side receives significantly more rain than the drier "leeward" side to the west and it is fairly consistent in amount throughout the year. The mountains obstruct and accelerate the flow of the warm, moist air from the ocean. As the air moves up and over the slopes and mountains, clouds form and rainfall is much greater. When the air descends over the leeward areas, it tends to be sunny and dry. These endless peaks, valleys, ridges and broad slopes are what gives Hawaii a climate that is different from the surrounding ocean, as well as a variety of differences within the islands themselves. These differences would not exist if the islands were flat and the same size.
