Kalaupapa Peninsula, located on the island of Molokai, is the former site of Father Damien’s leprosy colony. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed a law making Kalaupapa a National Historic Park. This amazing, historical area is open to the public, but you must be 16 years of age to visit. The most common way to reach the peninsula is by mule, where on the way you will travel down one of the highest sea cliffs in the world, past some of the most incredible scenery in Hawaii. Once you reach the peninsula, a tour guide who will tell you stories of those banished to this “prison in paradise” meets you. The tour will end with a lunch at Judd Park on the Kalawao side of Kalaupapa, which overlooks sea cliffs as the waves crash against rocks. The trip to Kalaupapa leaves most visitors awestruck, and it has been called “the most stunningly beautiful place in Hawaii.” Kalaupapa, like all of Molokai, is a step back in time to fifty years ago, when the pace was slow and life was relaxed. Molokai is an island where there is so little traffic, there is not one single traffic light on the island! If you truly want to skip the glitz and glamour, Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai may be for you!
