The tropical climate of the southeastern %u201Cwindward%u201D side of Oahu sees variations in rainfall and elevation within short distances on the island. The southern side of the island, near Honolulu and Waikiki Beach receives less rainfall than the north/northeastern sides. There are two mountain ranges that influence the climate of Oahu %u2013 both serve to block trade wind moisture from reaching the south and southwestern sides of the island, thus resulting in the drier climate. In the Waikiki area, yearly rainfall is 25 inches (with most of that occurring in November through March, except for the occasional thunderstorm on summer afternoons.) Compare this to Manoa Valley, which is just a few miles away in the mountains, and receives 158 inches. Overall, Oahu enjoys warm, balmy weather year round, with moderate humidity and no extremes. Even winter storms tend to be quick and occur mostly in the evenings.
