Kalapana-Puna is located thirty miles south of the city of Hilo, on the eastern, or "windward," side of the island. You will think you have found a hidden paradise when you visit Kalapana-Puna. This beautiful agricultural area is home to papaya, mango, orchid and antherium farms, and is known for its exotic black sand beaches. Things to do in the area include swimming and snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and exploring hot ponds and tide pools. The Puna Forest Reserve is just a few miles inland, and here you will find well maintained hiking trails that lead to spectacular vistas. Nearby Volcanoes National Park and Kilaua Volcano also offer opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, photography, wildlife viewing and birdwatching.a The Kalapana-Puna area has lots of interesting places for exploration. You can visit The Lava Tree State Monument, Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse and hike ancient trails and heiau. You will find this area of lush tropical gardens and colorful farmlands to be peaceful and quiet. This is not the Hawaii seen on most postcards or frequented by most tourists. It is, instead, a "different" Hawaii, a historical land of breathtakingly beautiful contrasts, definitely worth seeing.

Kalapana-Puna Weather & Climate

The southeastern portion of The Big Island has two seasons - winter and summer, but conditions are pretty similar year-round. Winter is slightly cooler and wetter, but Hawaii does not have the extremes of cold winters or summer heat waves. The east side of all of the Hawaiian Islands is wetter due to exposure to the prevailing northeast tradewinds, which bring rain to the eastern shores. Individual islands do have slight variations, however. The official rainy season starts in November, but showers tend to happen late in the evening and don't interfere with outdoor plans. Visitors will find more variation in temperature due to altitude rather than season. Evenings are generally cool and mild year round on The Big Island.
