Hawaii Kai
is located on the southeastern coast of Oahu, east of Honolulu on Highway 72 near Hanauma Bay. Home to the Hanauma Bay State Underwater Park where snorkeling and scuba diving provide exciting views of a variety of corals and reef fishes. Swimming is also popular at the park and there is an adjoining City and County Beach Park. Hawaii Kai Marina offers boat chartering, jet-skiing, parasailing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Nearby Koko Marina Center also offers water sports, and has a variety of specialty and gift shops, fine dining and casual eateries, plus an 8-theater Cineplex. The Makapuu Point State Wayside in Hawaii Kai is a one-mile hike along a former roadway to a lighthouse. This hike is a somewhat strenuous, up-hill climb to the 500-foot elevation and no drinking or restrooms are available along the way. However, if you are up for it, there are various points along the trail that provide spectacular sweeping views of the whole southeastern Oahu coastline. There are two public tennis courts and one championship golf course in Hawaii Kai, where the Pacific Ocean can be seen from every hole. Hawaii Kai offers an alternative to experiencing the real Oahu. Here, you can parasail high above the breathtaking vistas of the Bay, explore exotic underwater sea life, swim in the ocean under a beautiful Hawaiian sunset, or dine from a relaxing waterfront restaurant – without the crowds and hassles of some of the other well-known Oahu destinations.

Hawaii Kai Weather & Climate

Southeastern Oahu has a tropical climate with gentle northeasterly tradewinds and warm temperatures year-round. Temperatures vary little, except at higher elevations. Unlike the temperature, Hawaii%u2019s rainfall varies tremendously according to location. The highest amount of rainfall is usually at moderate elevations on the windward (east) sides of the islands and is due to moisture-laden oceanic tradewinds. Leeward (western) locations are drier, because they are shielded from the damp winds by mountains. Rain and windstorms are more frequent during Hawaii%u2019s winter months, but they generally clear up within 24 hours. Humidity on Oahu is moderate, but the cooling winds keep things quite comfortable and pleasant. Severe storms such as hurricanes or tropical storms, make landfall in the Central Pacific, on average, every 8 to 10 years.
