Kawaihae
Village is located on the northwestern Kohala Coast on The Big Island. This small country town is just minutes from the warm, sunny white sand beaches of the Kohala Coast, including Mauna Key Beach and Waikoloa Beach Resort. Kawaihae is home to the Garden of Pua Mau Place, which is located on the west slope of the Kohala Mountains. This impressive botanical garden has beautiful mountain and ocean views, and interesting ravines that slice through the Earth. The garden contains original sculptures, huge lava boulders, and a variety of everblooming tropical flowers, as well as a Hibiscus Maze. The park also contains The Magic Circle, which is an interesting collection of large stones based on the standing stone circles of the Celtic region of the British Isles. A ten-minute drive up the Kohala Mountains takes you to Waimea, home to Parker Ranch, beautiful boutiques and great restaurants. You will find Kawaihae to be a good central location to base your Big Island vacation, with its remote country charm being just a short drive to the island's finest resorts and restaurants, championship golf courses, hiking, snorkeling, sailboat rentals and kayak rentals, surfing, beachcombing and more!

Kawaihae Weather & Climate

The north/northwestern tip of The Big Island is lush and green year round. Due to its central location on the island, it is also somewhat in the middle where precipitation is concerned - not quite as dry as the western "leeward" side, but not as wet as the eastern "windward" side. Showers occur year round in this area, but most often at night or in the late afternoon. The temperature is warm throughout the year, only slightly warmer in the summer months, and cooler during the overnight hours. Other important features of the climate on The Big Island include moderate humidity and persistent northeasterly trade winds. In winter, the trade winds may be interrupted for days or weeks by the invasion of cyclones and this brings more rainstorms and southerly and westerly winds to the island.
