Captain-Cook is a small town that is located on the South Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. This quiet and peaceful town sits on the picturesque Kealakekua Bay, where the famous Captain Cook was killed, and today a monument stands among the kiawe trees in his honor. The monument is inaccessible by car, but there are guided rides down the Ka'awaloa Trail to the spot. The ride takes approximately an hour, and there is a picnic lunch provided once you reach the monument. It's a unique experience worth the trip. The town of Captain Cook is nestled on the slopes of Mauna Loa at an elevation of 1,400 feet and offers endless recreational choices such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and golf. Kealakekua Bay is excellent for snorkeling and scuba diving, swimming, and surfing. This serene village is also a beautiful area to simply explore and go shopping, and is known for their spas that offer massage, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, yoga workshops and more. Another interesting attraction in Captain Cook is a 180-acre park that contains a restored temple complex of Hale O Keawe Heiau that was originally built in 1650. Other nearby points of interest includes Volcano National Park, Mauna Kea and the Polynesian Village.

Captain Cook Weather & Climate

Hawaii has a subtropical climate with only two seasons - summer, between May and October, and winter, between October and April. The Big Island is the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, and its' climate varies only in amount of rainfall, not in temperatures. The South Kona Coast region near Kealakekua Bay is on the Big Island's dry west side. The most influencing factor is orographic - caused by the mountains. The dry leeward coast of The Big Island, which is protected from clouds by the 13,600-foot summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, receives less than 30 inches of rain per year - in comparison to the east windward coast which receives an average of 130 inches. During summer, it is not uncommon for daytime skies to remain clear blue for weeks on end.
